The famed Gunfight at the OK Corral is a topic that often comes up when advocates for gun control launch a rhetorical assault on the Second Amendment. The reason for bringing the subject up appears to be the mental association of what anti-gunners like to call “gun nuts” with what they take to be the gun happy Old West at its mythological peak. The comparison is actually somewhat appropriate, but not for the reason gun control advocates think. In reality the comparison is only ironically appropriate, for it shows just how misguided they are in their rush to make erroneous rhetorical connections.
Chris Dacus has previously published essays of philosophical and literary criticism in The Cormac McCarthy Journal ("The West as Symbol of the Eschaton in Cormac McCarthy") and Southwestern American Literature ("Borderline Insanity Modernity as a Political Problem in Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian"). He is currently completing the final volume of a three part study on the westerns of Robert B. Parker. The final volume gives an in depth analysis of the problem of Wyatt Earp through an interpretation of Parker's historical western novel, Gunman's Rhapsody.
